Vine Maple
Acer circinatum
Vine maple grows as a many-stemmed, arching understory tree, bending and rooting toward gaps in the canopy as it chases available light. Its long, straight stems were prized for basketry, and its sap can be boiled into syrup.
Where found
Forest understory throughout the Cascades and coastal ranges, especially along streambanks and canopy gaps.
Fun facts
- Its stems were woven into baskets for carrying wood and fish, and even shaped into baby cradles.
- The wood was carved into spoons, bowls, platters, and tool handles.
- Fall color is some of the most vivid in the region — scarlet, orange, and gold.
